Whittingham Fair is a Scarborough Fair variant and is included
under #2 in the Child cannon (The Elfin
Knight). Child (1882-1898)CPB refers to Bruce
and Stokoe's variant in vol II, p495. Bronson (1959-1972)BTT
also has this
variant
(vol I, p19), but for some reason changes the key from E Minor to
G Minor.
Bruce and Stokoe don't give a source for this ballad, except to say
that it is popular in the north and west of the county of
Northumberland.
