The Gleeman
The Child "Cannon"
Below is a list of all the ballads as listed in the Contents for
Francis James Child's The English
and Scottish Popular Ballads
(1882-1898)CPB
(Vol 1). In addition, for some of the ballads, I have added the titles
for any variant versions
that
Child has classified as belonging with the main entry.
This was mainly for my benefit in creating the site. To the
uninitiated, it is not obvious that "Scarborough Fair" belongs under
the heading "The Elfin Knight" (Child #2). Or that "The Outlandish
Knight", "False Sir John" or "May Colvin" belong to "Lady Isabel and
the Elf-Knight" (Child #4).
This work is ongoing, so is not yet complete.

Notes:
- § - Child lists airs for
these (in Volume V, Part II).
- ¤ - Although Child has an air for Lady Elspat (247), the
air probably more properly belongs to Hing Henry (32).
